What most people don't know

Most people have coverage
for this and never use it.

It's called MedPay, and it's part of most auto insurance policies in South Carolina. It's money set aside in your own plan to cover medical care after a car accident. You don't have to prove anything. You don't have to wait for a settlement. You don't need an attorney to access it. Most people never find out it's there.

Use your own insurance.
No referral, no attorney needed.

What people think vs What's actually true

  • Myth: "I need an attorney to get treatment covered."

Fact: MedPay is your own coverage. It pays out on your policy, not the other driver's. No attorney involved.

  • Myth: "It only covers me if the accident wasn't my fault."

Fact: Fault doesn't matter. MedPay pays regardless of who caused the accident.

  • Myth: "I have to wait until the claim settles."

Fact: MedPay pays as you go. Care starts now, not months from now.

  • Myth: "I need a referral from my doctor."

Fact: No referral needed. You can book directly.

MedPay is included in most policies from:

  • State Farm
  • GEICO
  • USAA
  • Allstate
  • Progressive

If you feel fine, read this

Feeling okay after a crash doesn't mean you're okay.

Adrenaline is good at hiding things. Plenty of people walk away from an accident feeling fine, then wake up two days later with a stiff neck, a headache that won't quit, or pain running down an arm. That's normal, and it's why getting checked early matters even when nothing hurts yet.

  • Neck stiffness or reduced range of motion
  • Headaches that started after the accident
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
  • Shoulder or upper back pain
  • Lower back pain or tightness
  • Dizziness or trouble concentrating
  • Pain that's getting worse instead of better
  • Trouble sleeping or turning your head to drive

Any of these showing up days or weeks later is worth an exam. So is none of them.

There's a practical reason to come in early too. The longer the gap between the accident and your first visit, the harder it gets to connect the injury to the crash. Getting documented early protects both your recovery and your claim.

The difference that actually matters

Most clinics treat what hurts. We document what changed.

After an accident, "how are you feeling?" isn't enough. Pain moves around, fades, and comes back. What matters is what actually shifted in your spine, and whether it's shifting back. That takes imaging, not guesswork.

Symptomatic Care

You come in hurting. They adjust you. You feel better for a few days, then you're back. Nothing gets measured, nothing gets recorded, and there's no way to show what the accident did or whether you're improving.

Corrective Care

We take X-rays and find the structural problem. We show you exactly what's wrong, explain why it's causing your symptoms, and build a plan with a beginning, middle, and end. Every visit is documented, so your progress is on record.

What we treat

What a crash actually does to your spine.

Even a low-speed collision puts force through your neck and back that your body isn't built to absorb. These are the injuries we see most often after an accident. If yours isn't on the list, book an exam and we'll tell you straight whether we can help.

Whiplash

The neck moves further and faster than it's designed to, straining the muscles, ligaments, and joints that hold it in place. Symptoms often don't show up until a day or two later, and they can linger for months without proper care. We use X-rays to see what actually shifted, not just where it hurts.

Dr. Jessica Hardner treating a patient after a car accident
  • Neck Pain

Limited range of motion, pain turning your head to check a blind spot, tension that settles in and doesn't leave.

  • Headaches & Migraines

Headaches that started after the accident, often coming from the upper neck rather than the head itself.

  • Low Back Pain

Impact and bracing put force through the lower spine. Pain that's worse getting in and out of the car is a common sign.

  • Herniated & Bulging Discs

Crash force can push a disc out of position. Most clinics can't identify this without imaging, which is why the X-rays matter.

  • Sciatica

Sharp pain running down the leg, typically from a disc or nerve issue in the lower back.

  • Shoulder & Upper Back Pain

Seatbelt and bracing injuries across the shoulder, chest, and upper back that get dismissed as bruising.

  • Spinal Decompression

For disc injuries that don't respond to adjustments alone. We have decompression tables on-site in Newberry.

  • Numbness and Tingling

Pins and needles in the arms or hands usually means a nerve is being compressed somewhere along the spine.

Dr. Jessica Hardner

DC, Clinic Director

Dr. Jessica came to this work through experience, not theory. Her path started on a medical mission trip that opened her eyes to natural healing and sparked a lasting interest in the nervous system and how the body moves. She earned her undergraduate degree in sports medicine and exercise science from Mercyhurst University and her Doctor of Chiropractic from Sherman College of Chiropractic.

She's been treating auto accident injuries in Newberry for years, and local attorneys refer their clients to her when those cases need documented care. Patients tend to use the same word about her exams: thorough. She'd rather take the extra time and find what's actually going on than move you through quickly.

Outside the clinic she's a competitive Irish dancer, teaches at Newberry College, and you'll find her at the farmers market most weekends. She sponsors the local swim team and runs a yearly fundraiser for the food pantry. This is her community, not just where her office happens to be.

I came in to see Dr. Jess for severe lower back and sciatic pain from a previous car accident. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Taylor was such a sweetheart—so kind and attentive—and made me feel completely comfortable while I waited for my appointment. I’m incredibly grateful for the care I received and will definitely be coming back regularly!

Our town gained an amazing chiropractor when she (Jessica) came here. She is such a blessing! She took awesome care of my family and I after an auto accident and did the paperwork as well. She is very friendly and takes her time and listens to you and is very knowledgeable about how to help you. I always leave feeling better. I highly recommend her for sure and she has a great coffee bar lol

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will my insurance cover chiropractic care after a car accident?

In most cases, yes. South Carolina auto policies often include Medical Payments coverage, usually called MedPay, which covers medical care after an accident. It applies whether or not the accident was your fault. If you have it, your care is typically billed directly to that coverage. We will check your policy for you before you owe anything.

What is MedPay?

MedPay is a part of your own auto insurance policy that pays for medical treatment after an accident. It is separate from your health insurance, it usually has no deductible, and it pays regardless of who caused the crash. Most people who have it do not realise it is there. Coverage amounts vary by policy, so we will verify yours before your first visit.

What if the accident wasn't my fault?

MedPay still applies. It pays from your own policy without waiting for the other driver's insurer to accept responsibility, which is often the fastest way to start care. Sorting out fault can take months. Your recovery should not have to wait for it.

What if the accident was my fault?

You are still covered. MedPay pays regardless of fault, so being the at-fault driver does not disqualify you from using it.

Do I need an attorney?

Not to use MedPay. It is your own coverage and you can use it directly. Some people choose to work with an attorney for other parts of a claim, and that is entirely your decision. Either way, you do not need one to start care with us.

Will using MedPay raise my insurance rates?

MedPay is coverage you have already paid for, and it is designed to be used. Whether any particular claim affects your premium depends on your carrier and your policy, so it is worth a quick call to your agent if you are unsure. We are happy to walk you through what we see on your coverage.

I feel mostly fine. Should I still get checked?

Yes, and this is the one we would push hardest on. Soft tissue injuries from a collision often do not show up straight away. Adrenaline masks a lot in the first few days, and neck and back pain frequently appear a week or more after the accident. Getting evaluated early gives you a baseline and catches problems while they are easier to address.

How soon after the accident should I come in?

The sooner the better, ideally within the first few days. Early evaluation helps clinically, and it also creates a clear record of your injuries close to the date of the accident, which matters if you end up making a claim.

I already went to the emergency room. Do I still need this?

Usually yes. Emergency care is there to rule out fractures, bleeding and anything immediately dangerous, which is exactly what it should do. It is not designed to assess the spinal and soft tissue injuries that cause the lingering neck and back pain people notice afterwards. That is what we look at.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with us.

What happens at my first visit?

You will sit down with Dr. Hardner and talk through the accident, what you are feeling, and anything that has changed since. She will do a full examination, and digital X-rays if your findings call for them. You will leave understanding what is going on and what a plan to address it looks like.

What if I don't have MedPay?

Not every policy includes it. If yours does not, we will tell you before you owe anything, and our new patient exam is $149. That covers the consultation, examination, digital X-rays, posture analysis and your Spinal Health Score.

How long will I need care?

That depends on your injuries and what the examination shows. You will get a specific number of visits and defined milestones at your Report of Findings, not an open ended commitment.
